Q. Are tours of the school available for prospective students?

Absolutely.  Tours are available Monday through Friday by appointment starting at 9a.  Our last tour leaves at 4p each day.  Please call (906)484-1081 or  click here to schedule a private tour of our campus and workshop facilities.

Q. How many students attend Great Lakes Boat Building School each year?

Traditionally, GLBBS has between 12-15 first year students and 5-10 second year students.

Q. What programs does GLBBS offer?

The School offers two full-time programs (Traditional Boat Building and Comprehensive Career Boat Building Program) as well as Build Your Own Boat and Artisan Workshops during the summer months.

Q. When should a student apply for admission?

Students are encouraged to apply as early as possible.  GLBBS admits students on a rolling admission beginning October 1.  The admission review process typically takes between 3 and 4 weeks.  Most students apply between October and May.  Applications are reviewed until each class is filled.

Q. How do I apply?

We suggest that all students apply online.  You may also download, print and complete your application by email or by sending in all of the components via the US mail.

All application documents and letters of reference should be mailed or delivered to the attention of the Director of Student Services at GLBBS.

Q. What are the admissions requirements at GLBBS?

  • The ability to understand written and oral instruction given in the English language
  • The physical capacity to undertake the day-to-day demands of a working boat yard
  • That a high school diploma, GED, or recognized equivalency has been achieved prior to the first day of class

Q. When is full-time class in session?

GLBBS’ full-time programs begin mid-September and run through May with Graduation typically taking place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.

Q. What is the cost of tuition for the 2017-18 academic year?

Q. What financial aid will be available to me and is there a payment plan?

Q. Where do students who attend the School live?

Our academic year is based on the local tourism off-season and there are many cabins and cottages available for rent at special GLBBS student monthly rates.  A number of local hotels also provide a special monthly rate for GLBBS students.  We encourage students to check out these establishments first as they are located closest to campus:

Q. How will class and workshop time be scheduled?

Students typically spend from 45 minutes to one and one half hours in the classroom at the beginning of each day.  The balance of the day is spent in the workspaces (workshop, finishing room, loft, or mill).

Q. Does GLBBS help with job placement after graduation?

We sure do.  While we can’t guarantee employment, we do our best to help students reach their career goals.  Students work with our Faculty and Staff to search for and prepare for careers in the maritime industry.
