Students at Great Lakes Boat Building School will have access to resources geared towards helping them make positive strides towards their career goals.  In concert with the skills learned in our workspaces, students learn to employ best practices when searching for a job, writing a resume, completion of employment applications, and providing references.

GLBBS students are also exposed to a wide variety of educational experiences outside the workshop through field trips, guest instructor workshops, and training focused on leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurship.

Students have access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to the Learning Resource Center on the Great Lakes Boat Building School’s campus.

The School’s library is home to nearly 2,000 texts, books, and periodicals focused on boat building and other maritime subjects.  Students also receive a library card for the local Les Cheneaux Community Library where they have access to the Inter-Library Loan program.

Additionally, there are printers, scanners, photocopiers, and laptop computers available for student use.  Secure WiFi specifically for student use is available campuswide.

Great Lakes Boat Building School does not currently provide on-campus housing, nor does the School guarantee housing for its students.  Most students choose to live in either Cedarville or Hessel (which is 3 miles west of the School).

Our academic year is based on the local tourism off-season and there are many cabins and cottages available for rent at special GLBBS student monthly rates.  A number of local hotels also provide a special monthly rate for GLBBS students.  We encourage students to check out these establishments first as they are located closest to campus:

Cedarville Lodge
Ford’s Cottages
Waterlawn Cottages

Students may choose to receive mail and packages at the GLBBS address.  Each student is given an inbox in the classroom to receive mail and communication from the School. email addresses and webmail services are available for students.  See the Director of Administration for details.

KayakThe Les Cheneaux Area and Upper Peninsula provide plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities no matter the season.  Students are encouraged to explore the many wonders of the Eastern Upper Peninsula after class and on weekends.

If you love the outdoors, you’ll love it here.  Whether you are into biking, hiking, sailing, rowing, canoeing or kayaking, fishing, hunting, birding, skiing, snowshoeing, weekend camping trips, riding ATVs or going snowmobiling we have something for you.  Visit for more details on upcoming community events and things to do.

Our students enjoy our waterfont campus for fishing, picnics, bonfires, and of course dock access.  Students with their own small craft are invited to dock and store their boats/trailers on campus.  The school has a small collection of boats (sailboats, kayaks, etc.) for student use after school and on weekends – after the student has successfully passed a basic use and safety course.

Student Services will also provide opportunities for group activities and extra-curricular classes throughout the school year.
