The School has a Board of Directors who provide oversight to the organization. Board members are the fiduciaries who steer the organization towards a sustainable future by adopting sound, ethical, and legal governance and financial management policies, as well as by making sure the School has adequate resources to advance its mission.

Joseph Reid – Board Chairman:
Joe is an attorney in Lansing, Michigan. Founder of Lansing’s Capitol National Bank and founder of Access Bidco, a non-depository financial institution based in Lansing, Michigan. Joe is an avid boat enthusiast and a longtime summer resident of Les Cheneaux area.
Kathy Tassier – Secretary:
Katherine Tassier is an Education Specialist currently employed at Bay Mills Community College. She brings to the Great Lakes Boat Building Board of Directors “real world” teaching and administrative experience having worked with both child and adult students. Katherine is distinguished by her ability to identify areas for development for the school leaders under her direction. She has a passionate belief in teachers and inspires them to become more valuable contributors to their organizations. Throughout her career, she has helped students recognize their unique capabilities and position themselves to be successful in their academic endeavors, first in a K-12 setting, and now in the college arena. Her background includes a Bachelor and a Master of Arts Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Lake Superior State University, as well as an Education Specialist Degree from the University of Michigan – Flint. As a lifelong resident of Les Cheneaux, Katherine is involved in many activities that support the area, and in the summer months can often be found sailing the many channels of Cedarville and Hessel.
Greg Malcho – Treasurer:
Greg is the longest serving member of the GLBBS Board of Directors. He joined the Board in 2008 as the Treasurer and continues to serve in this capacity. After 35 years working at Ford Motor Company in various accounting capacities, Greg retired in 1999. He spent many of those years as an auditor on the finance staff of the company. Greg has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree in Business Administration from Wayne State University. In 1947 at the age of 6, Greg started spending his summers in the Les Cheneaux Islands; he has been a summer resident ever since.
Donald Pierce Moore – Director, Audit Committee Chair:
After decades of living and traveling around the world as a lawyer and finance executive, Donald became a full-time resident of Hessel, MI and joined the board in 2017. He has been a partner in global law firms, served on various for-profit and not-for-profit boards and been entrepreneur many times over. Donald currently is Senior Counsel with the law firm of Miller Canfield Paddock & Stone PLC focusing on international transactions and is developing an aviation business at the Hessel Airport. He has a B.A. and a J.D. from the University of Michigan, and an M.B.A. from the University of Miami. In addition to being a member of the Board of the School, Donald and his wife Jackie were students in 2017 when they built a 17-foot Noreaster Dory that they use regularly in the Les Cheneaux Islands.
David Parlin – Director:
Dave is a retired businessman and prominent entrepreneur from Cincinnati, Ohio and a long-time summer resident of the Les Cheneaux area. His avocation is racing sailboats.
Patrick Schuster – Director, Executive Committee Chair:
Pat is the owner and Chief Executive Operator of Great Lakes Beverage Inc. He served as the President of the Montcalm County Fair Association for 15 years. Pat has many years of experience in fundraising which includes a $3.5 million new fairground. Pat has served Winfield Township as a trustee (6 years) and as a Township Supervisor (4 years). He has recently been elected as a trustee for Clark Township.
Thomas May – Director:
Thomas joined the board in 2017, shortly after building an Eastport Pram in the Summer Workshop. After graduating from the University of Michigan, Thomas worked at Ford, Motorola and Johnson Controls before co-founding MedHub, an internet-based medical education management system. Thomas now spends his summers on La Salle Island with his wife, Trudy, and sons Joey and Alex.

Dave Crockett – Director:
Dave is the owner of Osprey Technologies, LLC., an engineering firm with offices in Tempe Arizona and recently opened fabrication facility in Sault Ste Marie Michigan. Osprey Technologies specializes in design, analysis, and fabrication of composite structures for the aerospace, aviation, marine, and wind energy industries. Dave was also the developer and instructor for Wisconsin Indianheads Technical College Composite Technology Program.
Janet Carrington – Director:
Janet Carrington was born in Indianapolis, Indiana into a family dedicated to philanthropy, and with a deep abiding love of the Les Cheneaxu Islands. In 1977, she moved with her two young children to New York City, where she opened Carrington, a gallery/shop on the Upper East side that became renowned for its impeccable style and support of local and regional artists.
Having spent summers with her parents and grandparents in family cottages on Marquette Island, Janet found herself drawn to the Snows, and in 1991, with her children grown, she moved from the East Coast to Cedarville. Today, she happily splits her time between her homes in Cedarville and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
A long-time wooden boat enthusiast who has overseen the restoration of two historic crafts, Boss and the Whitecap, Janet is proud to have been a supporter of the boat school since its inception.
