Michigan Works! holds resume writing workshop for spring graduates

This spring the first cohort of students from Great Lakes Boat Building School’s new 12-month Comprehensive Career Boat Building curriculum will graduate.  To ensure that these soon-to-be graduates put their best foot forward, GLBBS brought in experts from Michigan Works! Upward to conduct resume writing workshops.

Topics covered included how to conduct a job search, resume writing techniques, and interview etiquette.  Students learned the importance of organizing and targeting their resume so the skills/experience most relevant to potential employers stand out.

“We prepare students every day for work – for careers in boating – for being professionals in the maritime industry”, said Chris Ritchie, GLBBS Admissions & Career Services Advisor. “We have to make sure that [our students] are confident as they begin applying and interviewing for jobs.”

The school also conducts mock interviews, in addition to seminars focused on responsible social media use and setting up LinkedIn Profiles.

“At GLBBS we are proud of the fact that, for the past four years, 100% of graduates of the Comprehensive Career Boat Building program have either gone into business for themselves or accepted positions that put their Great Lakes Boat Building School training to use”, says Ritchie. “We’re working hard to help our students get the jobs they want, where they want, and at a good wage.”
