Gartside 19′ Cutter

Completed Project

The lines of this small cutter are based on a English south coast fishing vessel of the 1850s.
Price: $25,000

PROJECT SCOPE

Paul Gartside has designed several of these Falmouth inspired sail boats. This latest one is the smallest of the series and yet has the look of a much bigger boat. The traditional construction features a white oak backbone with white cedar planking on bent oak frames. The large open cockpit makes a great place for some serious day-sailing or open-boat cruising. The deck is plywood with an epoxy/glass overlay. The spars are solid Sitka spruce with custom stainless steel hardware and rigging.

STUDENT LEARNING EXPERIENCE

This boat was built by two different classes. The first year class of 2010 lofted, framed and planked it. And the first year class of 2011 competed it with the exception of engine installation and rigging. Students of these two classes learned the following skills while building this boat:

  • Advanced Lofting Techniques
  • Carvel Planking
  • Joinery
  • Engine Installation
  • Spar Making
  • Rigging
  • Sail Making
