Great Lakes Boat Building School

Raffle Winners Launch their new Boat!

A week after their winning number (#69) was drawn by GLBBS Comprehensive Career Boat Building student Jesse Nakfoor at the 10th Annual Beer Fest & Boat Yard Bash on August 30th – Jake and Cheryl Hewitt met their new boat.  The lucky couple purchased their “Restoration Raffle” ticket for the 1947 Chris-Craft Deluxe at the Les Cheneaux Island Antique & Classic Boat Show on August 10th in Hessel.

The 17-foot Chris-Craft was donated to the school in 2017 by Mr. Michael Foss of Des Moines, IA.  Twenty-two students had a hand in the restoration effort; gaining critical experience in restoration techniques, propulsion systems, and finishing skills.

You can read more about the student experience here.

The first-of-its-kind “Restoration Raffle” raised $50,000 to provide resources and scholarships for GLBBS students.  Only 100 chances to win were sold.  The school has plans to raffle off a boat again in 2020 – the most likely candidate?

A 1939 Chris-Craft Deluxe.

We would also like to thank each and every individual who purchased a chance to win this beautiful boat and their support of our School.  Please enjoy pictures of the Hewitt’s first time out on the boat (below) – they have not yet decided on a name for the boat!
